Hot Picks by Media Experts

Imogen Bailey, Toy & Hobby Retailer Magazine – Australia
New Decade, New Innovations
The Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair is always such a great start of the year in the toy business. The show provides the first glimpse into what’s trending, what’s new and what’s coming later.
Among the thousands of products on show, there are key trends that underpin the innovations that are set to hit shelves in 2020.

STREAM
STREAM; the trend that has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Growing from STEM to STEAM to now STREAM to incorporate robotics and arts, the range of toys in this category is constantly expanding.

What is particularly appealing about this category is its ability to take large scale concepts and bring them down to an approachable level.

Take the Eastcolight Biochemistry Collection for example. The range features an Aquaponic Set, a DNA Extraction set and a Growth Experiment set among others. The Aquaponic Set teaches children about the ecosystem and how nothing goes to waste in nature – a particularly poignant concept given the waste issues humanity is facing.

Meanwhile the Growth Experiment teaches children to compare different growth conditions, looking at which light and chemical combinations prove to be the best growing conditions for a plant. This experiment introduces thinking about future agricultural practice and farming when land is scarce.

FANDOM AND COLLECTING
Another trend that has proved its longevity is the pop-culture/fandom trend. This trend is demonstrated by the ThreeZero Transformers figures which feature up to 300 parts, 80% of which are hand painted to show weathering and finer details.

Soap Studio’s Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts figures also appeal to the collector, featuring 37 joints for articulation as well as an included backdrop for photography.

AR
The evolution in AR isn’t slowing down, with many companies taking advantage of the capabilities AR offers to engage children in learning and education.
PlayShifu’s interactive AR Globe features 200-300 different opportunities to learn about the world, its animals and monuments through AR.

Hear What Buyers Say

“Based in the Philippines, Toyzone Xpress sells collectibles and figures featuring licensed characters through its physical store and online store. Currently, I source collectibles and figures through trading companies from Mainland China and Taiwan. As I want to buy directly from the suppliers, I am keen to find them through my first-time visit to the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair. I am so happy to have found two potential suppliers from Hong Kong at the fair. One of them is offering licensed figures which are exactly what I am sourcing from trading companies, so I’ll definitely buy from this supplier after the fair. The other supplier has a distributor in the Philippines, so I’ll contact the distributor later. The Hong Kong fair is a good place for sourcing figures and I feel safe in Hong Kong too.”
Ralph Alvin Cua, Owner, Toyzone Xpress, the Philippines

“Launched five years ago, TINY is a Hong Kong brand for diecast model cars and miniatures featuring Hong Kong’s people, vehicles and scenes. We started to promote our TINY brand at the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair three years ago. We are showcasing Kowloon Walled City for the first time at the fair, which has attracted a lot of attention from international buyers. This year we have met with more buyers from Europe and the US who are very interested in our diecast model cars. We have connected with new buyers from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and the US. A large toy distributor from Australia has placed an onsite order for 100 pieces of our 1:18 diecast model cars. In addition, more than 30 international buyers have expressed their interest in cooperating with us and they want us to use their own themes to tailor-make diecast car models. The fair helps to build our brand and to explore cooperation opportunities with buyers from all over the world. We’ll maintain our presence at the fair.”
Masaki Law, Business Development Officer, Toyeast Limited, Hong Kong (Booth: 1E-D32)

“Eastcolight is presenting 12 new products at this year’s Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair. Among the new products, we focus on promoting AR Globe that encourages kids to learn through play. Many buyers like AR Globe because it is an inexpensive educational toy. Europe and the US have been our major markets. We are keen to look for new buyers especially from Southeast Asia because we see a lot of potential for our AR toys in this market. We have met with more quality and solid buyers who really want to do business with us this year. For example, an existing distributor from France has placed an onsite order. We are a long-term supporter of the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair because it provides an ideal platform for us to promote our brand, launch new products, meet with existing distributors and look for new distributors. Our toys business will remain steady this year.”

Exhibitor’s Echo
“In business for 26 years, we design and produce high-quality baby clothes for customers worldwide. We are investing more in using organic fabrics to enrich our collections. Our factory is located near Lisbon in Portugal and our Hong Kong operation is facilitating our expansion in Asia. We like exhibiting at Hong Kong Baby Products Fair to reach out to new markets in Southeast Asia and Mainland China. Our products continue to draw customers this year. We’ve met with new buyers from South Africa, Malaysia and Bangladesh. They are very interested in our collections and we will send samples for further discussions. A Taiwanese retailer who started business with us through last year’s exhibition came again and placed an order worth €35,000 to €50,000 for new designs. The fair effectively helps our business expansion. Despite reports of public protests in Hong Kong, we found the city very safe and calm. We went shopping in Causeway Bay last night and everything was fine.”

I have identified 10 potential suppliers from Japan, Thailand and Mainland China at Hong Kong Baby Products Fair this year for various items like baby clothes, strollers, feeding & nursery products, and gift sets. The concurrent Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair has also a lot of interesting products on display. I have not encountered any protests in Hong Kong. The city is very safe. There is no concern for security.”

“Baby Street provides a diversity of original baby products such as mommy bags, diaper bags, breast feeding items and bath accessories. Hong Kong Baby Product Fair is always a solid platform for us to showcase the latest designs. Newly-designed bags made of recycled eco-friendly fabrics form one of exhibition highlights this year. We also offer more affordable bags to cater to different customers’ demand. The response has been quite good. We’ve met some new buyers from Malaysia, Russia, Brazil and Argentina. A German buyer engaged in B2B business with hotels is especially keen to purchase our mommy bags. A Thai customer who started business with us after last year’s exhibition is also coming to see our new collections. This fair is a great place to find new customers. We’re satisfied with the results”
Cecilia Rettien, Operations Manager, Baby Street Limited, Hong Kong (Booth: 3F-C01)

“Utado is participating in Hong Kong Baby Products Fair for the sixth year to raise our profile. We focus on promoting the products of well-known German stroller brand ABC Design and affiliated Moji baby furniture items. This year’s highlights include ABC Design’s light-weight strollers foldable with one hand as well as Moji wooden highchairs and accessories. This fair is an excellent meeting place for us to network and enhance exchanges with executives from German headquarters and distributors from different markets. We can always find new customers here. This year’s some new buyers from Thailand, Korea and Turkey have approached us to explore opportunities. Talks with buyers and distributors are very fruitful. We’re pleased with the response and will definitely continue to exhibit here.”
Waveman Tsang, Managing Director, Utado International Company Limited, Hong Kong (Booth: 3G-A04)

“Baby Land is a leading manufacturer of baby products in Mainland China with a business history of about 20 years. We export a great variety of products from baby strollers and walkers to push cars, motor cars, beds and bathtubs. Major markets include Europe, USA, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Hong Kong Baby Products Fair is a must-attend annual event for us to grow our presence. We can find new buyers every year. Most importantly, this is an excellent place to meet with existing customers and exchange ideas regularly. They can look at our newest designs here and strengthen further cooperation. The protests in Hong Kong have not affected our exhibition. We continue to occupy a large booth space to showcase our rich collections. We’re pleased with the results and will continue to exhibit here.”
Lin Songhai, Manager, Technical Operations, Baby Land, Mainland China (Booth: 3G-F38)

“We started out as a baby furniture retailer in 1986 and began to produce baby furniture in 1990. Our products have won many international design awards. Currently, 50 percent of our products are exported to Asia while Europe and the Middle East take the rest. This is our fourth year participating in the Hong Kong Baby Products Fair and the continuity enables more people to know the heritage, quality and designs of our TUTTI bambini brand. Our NOVA evolutionary highchair has attracted a lot of interest at this year’s fair. Due to rising affluence, Asia is a fast-growing market for our baby furniture, so the Hong Kong fair is important to us. Although the social events in Hong Kong have affected buyer attendance, we have met with more quality people who want to come and buy our baby furniture. The Hong Kong Baby Products Fair is the best show for us. The buyer profile is more international. At this year’s fair, we have met with new buyers from Argentina, Asia, Canada and the US. We have received onsite orders from both new and existing buyers. The Hong Kong fair contributes 30-40 percent of our new business for this year. We’ll definitely return to the fair next year.”
Michael Samuel, Managing Director, Tutti Frutti Direct Limited, the UK (Booth: 3F-G04)
