Insights from Media Expert:
The toy industry is first and foremost a product business, but it can also be a fashion business, an entertainment business and a brand business. The Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair showcases all this diversity for its global audience. Even so, several trends emerge—or expand—for 2019.

Design — Over the years I’ve been attending the show, there has been a growing sophistication in design. It’s never been stronger, and from products to packaging, there are toys from a wide range of companies ready to play in the global business.

Technology — Dropping prices and innovation mean smart tech toys that do more and teach more. The AR STEM line from Eastcolight is one example of how augmented reality can be applied to deliver fun, imaginative engagement, and a rich learning experience.

Action Figures Grow Up — Over the past few seasons, more and more action figures are being targeted to collectors. That’s meant some pretty wild creativity, with new sculpts and interpretations of favourite characters. BigBoysToys is showing dramatic figures based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Streetfighter and more. These outstanding figures are not just for kids.

The Maker Movement Inspires Play — Call it DIY or Arts and Crafts, we were impressed by the great kits to inspire kids to express themselves creatively. These are a great complement to tech toys in a child’s toy box, and companies like Wing Art with their marbling kit for fabric or paper are delivering outstanding experiences for creative kids.

Value — On average, retail prices for toys are coming down. This is a trend over the past two years, and delivering both monetary and play value continues to be a major concern—and competitive advantage—for companies.

Diverse as the toy industry is, there’s no better place to see it than here at the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair.

Exhibitors’ Echo:
“Kintoy is a die-cast model car manufacturer which owns two brands, namely Kinsmart for scale models and Kinsfun for cartoon cars. Since our current production capacity cannot meet the increased demand for our die-cast model cars, we’ll relocate our factory from Shenzhen to Qingyuan to more than double of our production capacity and to save production costs. To promote our brand image, we have unique booth decorations at the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair every year. This year we are displaying a real Volkswagen bus with the beach as our theme which successfully attracts a lot of attention from buyers. Buyers like to take pictures in front of our bus and also go inside our booth to see new products. We have received onsite orders from some of our existing European customers and met with new buyers too. We are happy with the results so far.”
Pax Lam, Director, Kintoy Die-Casting Manufactory Limited, Hong Kong

“Three years ago, we acquired Wham-O, a famous manufacturer of outdoor games in the US. Unlike traditional toys, we see huge potential for outdoor games in overseas markets because parents encourage their children to play outdoor games instead of playing with mobile phones. We have set up our own office in the US to serve customers in North America and have distributors for other international markets. This is our second time exhibiting in the Brand Name Gallery at the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair because we are keen to increase our brand awareness and look for new distributors. The fair attracts a large number of buyers from all over the world and we have met with new buyers from the Middle East and Southeast Asia.”

“Smart Babies is an importer, wholesaler and retailer of toys for babies and teenagers in Chile. Currently, we have six toy shops and will open two more shops this year. We expect that our sales will have a 10-15% increase this year. This is my first-time visit to the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair to look for boy toys, baby toys, outdoor games, water toys and scooters. So far, I have found 10-12 potential suppliers. I’ll close deals with three or four suppliers and buy US$25,000-30,000 worth of toys from each supplier. I like the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair very much because it offers me a lot of business opportunities. It is a huge show showcasing different kinds of toys and I can find everything that I need.”
Nicolás Domínguez, Commercial Director, Smart Babies, Chile

“Founded in 1976, Toys and Toys is a toy wholesaler and distributor in Jordan. Our toys are imported mainly from Europe and Mainland China. I have visited the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair for several times. I really like the fair because it is well-organised and it is easy to find what I need here. At this year’s fair, I have found more novelties and nice packaging designs that can attract consumers and boost sales. I have already confirmed orders with at least six suppliers from Italy, Mainland China and the US for US$200,000 worth of toys. Traditional toys and smart toys have the biggest sales in our market. I plan to buy more at the fair.”

Toy Companies develop new products to reflect the changes in kids’ lives
The Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair is the perfect place to find new trends and innovations across the entire kids’ products sector, and a walk round this year’s event shows how toy companies are developing new ranges to fit with the way in which kids’ lives are changing. Here are a few examples:

ON THE MOVE
Kids are travelling more and more, and there are a great many new lines which will help parents to make the trips more enjoyable and stress-free. Ridaz has developed a range of moulded travel cases, so that children can have their own luggage which is both fun and practical. Meanwhile Mojo has gone a step further, producing a backpack which converts into a playset, allowing the children to take their toys with them wherever they go and also giving them a play environment with which to play with the toys. The backpacks are available in both dinosaur and unicorn versions.

FASHIONABLE KIDS
Today’s kids are fashion-conscious from a very young age, and know all about the very latest trends and fads from the internet. TY has taken one of the latest fashion trends – reversible sequins – and developed a whole range of products that are colourful and tactile; the Flippables range started with a selection of plush animals, but has now been extended to include fashion items such as bags, slippers and slipper socks. Toy shops are selling these products really well, creating a new revenue stream.

GENDER NEUTRALITY
It used to be that boys products predominantly came in blue and girls products mainly came in pink. That is all changing, as parents are demanding more gender-neutral options; Classic World has changed the colour of its play kitchen from pink to red to reflect the changing tastes of parents and their children.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY OPTIONS
As global concern grows over the abundance of plastic used in the manufacture of toys, some suppliers are looking for more environmentally-friendly options. Eco Udo Future International Paper Products Company has launched a range of play houses and structures made from sturdy cardboard, giving children a great play environment while offering parents the option to avoid buying large pieces of plastic.

Each aisle of the show is packed with new products and innovation, showing that toy companies cannot afford to stand still, but must keep evolving their product offering to reflect the changing attitudes and tastes of parents across the globe.

Italians at Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair
The Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair opened its doors on 7 Jan, just as the association representing Italian artisans (Confartigianato) announced, based on Eurostat data, that the imports of toys from Mainland China have grown again, coming to represent almost 48% of the items sold on the Italian market.

But there are also Italian companies that row in the opposite direction: in Asia they see a potential market for their exports. Some of them are now in Hong Kong, a place where, these days, it is possible to meet buyers from all over the world.

“The Italian market is at stake. That is why we are aiming to strengthen exports, opening up new horizons,” explains Cristiano Tonelli, Liscianigiochi's export manager. The company produces educational, scientific and creative games made in Italy. “We distribute today in 56 countries and regions, and exports represent 28% of our turnover: we aim to reach 50%.”

“We are survivors,” exclaims Mario Androni, founder of Androni Giocattoli, which is today another of the few large companies that have maintained its production in Italy, and which has been taking part in the Hong Kong fair for over twenty years. Exports account for 82% of sales and products such as the Baby Beach bucket are appreciated all over the world.

Even Pasuto Srl, a family company founded in 1953 that operates under the Toy Color brand, focuses on quality made in Italy and has realized a new line of products that stimulate creativity without living up ecology: “A line of watercolors with a completely recyclable paper packaging,” says Luisa Pasuto. “We are small but we export to over 30 countries and regions. We have to be here: buyers from all over the world come here,” says Marc Rizzetti, sales and marketing director of LAP Srl, a company specializing in the processing of plastic.

“Emerging markets are an opportunity not to be missed,” says Anna Venturelli, head of a company specializing in the distribution of soft toys, which brought to Hong Kong the exclusive licensed National Geographic line. The export of Venturelli Angelo di Venturelli Anna & Co. is worth more than 50% of sales: “Not all countries and regions in the world are easy to enter but, often, foreign operators give more guarantees than Italians.”

But in Hong Kong there are also musical toys by Bontempi, not to mention the childcare companies made in Italy which exhibit in the Baby Products Fair, from Pali to Foppa Pedretti and Cam il Mondo del Bambino, to sponges by Bellini.
Radaelli Francesca, Journalist, TG-TuttoGiocattoli, Italy

Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair 2019; lots of people
It’s busy this year at the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair as the floor here at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre seems busier than I have seen it in the past.

Being here at the show, one gets a chance to mingle and speak with toy people from all over the world, and that provides a perspective none of us gets from staying home. I have been with attendees from Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Israel, the UK, France, Germany, Brazil, India and many, many more.

In my numerous conversations, I am finding a generally positive vibe. Yes, there are concerns about tariffs, Brexit and the continuing fallout from the Toys R Us USA bankruptcy, but those with whom I have spoken seem satisfied with their year (all things considered) and looking forward to getting on with the future in 2019.

All in all, I am feeling good about our industry and looking forward to getting continuing feedback as I continue my travels to other fairs.

“In business for three years, Dumyah.com is Jordan’s largest online sales platform for baby products, maternity items and toys. We offer some 12,000 different items, about 80% of which are sourced from local suppliers and the remainder imported by ourselves. Our business is growing very rapidly. I am visiting Hong Kong Baby Products Fair for the first time to source maternity products in particular. There is strong demand for maternity clothes and underwear in Jordan with the popularity of breastfeeding that will lower the risk of breast cancer. This fair has a good mix of products on offer. With a sourcing budget of U$25,000 to US$30,000, I am keen to develop business with new suppliers. This fair is a good sourcing platform for our expansion. We can find a lot of baby items here and learn about the latest market trends to introduce better products to customers in Jordan.”
Kayed Qunibi, Managing Director, Dumyah.com, Jordan

“With a history of 20 years, Bang Toys imports various baby items and toys to sell in Brazil. This is my first visit to the Hong Kong Baby Products Fair to source new items. So far, I have found some interesting baby mobiles from a Hong Kong exhibitor Biba Toys Company Limited. The baby gym mats of another Hong Kong supplier are also attractive. We will negotiate further to conclude business and place orders. The concurrent Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair is another good show. I’ve identified a variety of toys like baby telephones and instruments from three Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese suppliers. This is a very rewarding journey. I expect to spend up to US$500,000 for different baby items and toys. Hong Kong Baby Products Fair is an excellent sourcing place. I can find so many suppliers and suitable products all in one place. The guided tour for buyers is very useful. I will visit the fair again.”
