CENTRESTAGE ELITES :
Femininity • Cultural Identity • Creativity |
Celebrated designers with global appeal dazzled the runway at CENTRESTAGE ELITES Opening Gala Show with their Pre-Spring 2020 collections. Homegrown fashion talent Anais Mak, founder of ANAÏS JOURDEN, demonstrated the art of underpinning feminine aesthetic with a tribute to Hong Kong’s heritage at the finale. New York-based Joseph Altuzarra, the mastermind of the namesake womenswear brand ALTUZARRA, took cues from Robert Altman’s 1977 classic 3 Women and developed a collection stemming from earthy sensuality and urban sophistication.
The expressions from their collections echoed and extended the theme of CENTRESTAGE 2019 – Future Tribes, while some 240 participating brands from home and abroad continued to explore cultural representation through inspirations and aesthetics. |

The fourth edition of CENTRESTAGE is living up to its repute of Asia’s Fashion Spotlight. With exhibitors around the globe showcasing their craft under one roof, designers and brands bringing the latest trends to the fore, expert talks on industry topics — it has got everyone covered.
Talking about the fashion shows, the FASHIONALLY Collection #14 was really impressive with designers like DEMO reiterating the global shift towards gender fluid fashion. Next, the Brand Collections’ Show 1 showcased accessories in its full glory with Chinese arts and crafts being a personal favourite.
As this is my first visit to CENTRESTAGE, I cannot let go without talking about the CENTRESTAGE ELITES. The opening gala show brought together the two fashion stalwarts - Joseph Altuzarra and Anais Mak, who launched their global 2020 Pre-Spring collections. While ALTUZARRA was all about the wardrobe for modern woman with avant-grade and polished techniques, Anais’ creativity knew no bounds with her contemporary silhouettes and graphic punch seen in her brand ANAÏS JOURDEN.
I am way too excited and ready to see what’s in store for the remaining two days of this fashion extravaganza.

“NORBLACK NORWHITE was born out of our love for Indian textiles. Our collections range from menswear, womenswear, streetwear to gender neutral apparel, featuring a broad selection of fabric-manipulated products that are hand-woven, hand-dyed and hand printed etc. Staged in Hong Kong, CENTRESTAGE was highly recommended by a friend who deals with buyers all the time, so we want to be part of the event. On its first day, I was already packed with appointments arranged by the HKTDC business matching service. Many walk-in buyers were also attracted to Indian textiles and Made-in-India products. I am extremely glad to have established strong connections with global buyers from France, Italy, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. Many of them expressed their strong interest in our products and wanted to make a deal. The show is truly international and well-organised. The HKTDC staffers have been very helpful. I feel that our brand is part of the event.”

“Headquartered in the Gangdong area of Seoul, L.AND is a cooperative association of young fashion designers. The organisation houses four leather brands including ELESS, VENTO, eeeun and TEMP°S, which primarily offer bags and other leather products. I am the designer of TEMP°S, which specialises in handbags and messenger bags. Participating in CENTRESTAGE is L.AND's first overseas endeavour to open up markets outside Korea. Before the show, we learned from many Korean designers about the fame of CENTRESTAGE and its reputation as the premier platform for Korean brands to open up market access in Mainland China. There are quite a few Korean brands at the fairground, but they are mostly apparel brands. Therefore, we are confident that our bag labels can stand out in the show. As one of the new-comers, we wish to meet with more buyers in addition to exploring new markets and taste of consumers. Building successful connections with local retailers would be an added bonus. So far we have met with some walk-in buyers from Germany, Malaysia, Singapore and the Mainland China. Others are from Germany, Holland, Malaysia and Taiwan through the HKTDC business matching service. The buyer from Holland, in particular, shows strong interest towards the products of eeeun and find the texture of materials appealing. It was highly appreciated that the HKTDC staffers offered immediate on-site support to us whenever we needed help.”
Joanne Jeon, Director, TEMP°S and L.AND, Korea |
“As a music teacher-turned-designer, I find fashion design, especially tailoring wedding gowns, is where my passion and talent lies. Focusing on bridal wear, my brand Brian Chen Bridal was established in 2015. So far I have launched five collections across the global market in Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom. Each of the collection and pieces are named after different music notes, and this approach is highly endorsed in the European market. Hong Kong is an international city and an ideal platform to meet with global buyers. Aside from participating in the HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter, I have signed up for CENTRESTAGE for two straight years where the show gathers abundant of fashion buyers. It is normal for European buyers to shortlist brands that revisit the same exhibition every year, and this explains my presence here. Last year, I got to know an e-tailer from the United Kingdom and a sole agency from the Middle East. We are still in the process of negotiation to work out contract details. The host also help arranged several business matching meetings last year, and I expect some line-ups with agents from Europe, Middle East and the United States this year. This morning, I met with some Italian buyers from the tour led by the HKTDC and a buyer from an Iranian agency. My collection will be shown at the fashion parade this afternoon and at the Grand Show on the third day, which are the valuable opportunities to gain media exposure.”

“Leflair is a leading online retailer in Vietnam selling a wide range of fashion, beauty and homeware products. Our e-commerce business also serves customers in the Philippines and will extend to the Malaysian market next year. We focus on luxury fashion brands in particular. I have got in touch with 15 brands at CENTRESTAGE this year. About half of them are Korean brands. WHY-RI ROVER from Korea, Lexx MODA from Macau, as well as two Italian brands - STELLA SOFIA and FRANCESCO BENIGNO, are among those with the best potential for business development. I am interested in the Korea brand’s women’s collections and the other two brands’ footwear. I expect to conclude business with them within one month. Average order usually involves 500 to 800 pieces. This show features so many fashion brands from different parts of the world. I really like it.”
Marilyn Teo, Head of Cross-border, Leflair, Vietnam |
“WANDER specialises in the supply of unique clothing, bags, accessories and homeware in Taiwan. We offer a mix of new and vintage items including well-maintained used apparels and antique items with special design or a story to tell. We operate two outlets within department stores in Tainan and Taichung with a third outlet opening in Taipei soon. This is our first visit to CENTRESTAGE to explore opportunities. We love the work wear collection showcased by Hong Kong brand SFZ & SON. Further talks will be held to select the best designs and conclude business. Initial order amount is estimated at US$1,000. We usually source products through agents. CENTRESTAGE is an exciting event and this is an eye-opening experience for us.”
Febie Lin (left), Founder, and Sinic Choy (right), Founder, WANDER, Taiwan |
“Our company is operating Tom Greyhound concept store in Paris selling some 60 brands of fashion collections. We are part of Korea’s Hyundai Department Store group. I am looking for new designer brands at CENTRESTAGE to expand our portfolio. At the FASHIONALLY COLLECTION runway show, I spotted the women’s and men’s collections presented by two Hong Kong brands, namely NECRO POON and DEMO. I really like their sophisticated designs and minimalist styles. Another Hong Kong brand VVISSI also offers very nice designs while the footwear collection by Italian brand NOOVA has strong appeal. They will provide the line sheets including the pricing and delivery details. We will negotiate further to prepare collections for Fall/Winter 2020. Initial orders are expected to be around US$5,000 to US$10,000 each. I hope to visit the show again.”
