Exhibitors’ Echo

Ted Grant, Fundy Drinks Ltd. (Canada) (Booth: 3C-E02)

“This is the 11th year we have organised a Spanish pavilion at Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. A total of 38 wine companies from 20 DO wine regions of Spain are joining together to showcase a wide range of wines. It represents a 30% increase over last year in terms of the number of participating companies, providing a clear sign of our commitment to promoting Spanish wines through the Hong Kong fair. Among them are five organic wineries in the pavilion. Eco-conscious wine production is the trend for the industry and demand is getting increasingly strong for organic wines. The response looks positive. The Hong Kong fair is a solid platform for Spanish wines to gain more prominence and increase people’s knowledge about the quality and diversity of our wines. We will strive to provide more wine varieties and bring together more Spanish wineries to exhibit here. This is an international trade event we cannot miss every year.”
Cristina Teijelo, Senior Trade Commissioner, Consulate General of Spain Trade Commission Hong Kong & Macau

“Bettane Desseauve has been participating in Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair over the years, introducing the best wines from France for buyers worldwide. This year, we’ve gathered a total of 40 wineries at the French pavilion showcasing a great variety of quality wines from different wine growing regions. There is a mix of new participating wineries and repeat exhibitors wishing to explore more business opportunities here. Buyers will be able to find top French wineries and discover some hidden gems in our pavilion. As usual, the Hong Kong fair contributes a lot to wine business growth. After the abolition of wine duties in 2008, it’s become necessary to showcase here every year, especially for those expanding into Hong Kong and Mainland China. Despite the public incidents in Hong Kong, the French pavilion is making a strong presence again with many wineries joining us. We all see that it’s business as usual and feel very safe in the city. We value highly our long-term partnership with HKTDC and will definitely bring together more French wineries to showcase here.”
Thierry Desseauve, President, Bettane Desseauve, France

Buyers’ Commentary

Lucy Bunce, Underground Wines (Singapore)

“Aura is engaged in a diversified business portfolio encompassing wines, fashion, car trading, logistics and fast-moving consumer products. Our wine business has been growing strongly and we are looking for new channels to source more quality wines. I am visiting Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair this year to find new wines and new suppliers. UK exhibitor Aceo Ltd offers some nice whisky from Scotland. I am now preparing an initial order involving about 1,200 bottles and a deal is expected to be concluded by next week. Talks are underway with a Japanese whisky supplier with a potential order worth about RMB600,000. I have also got in touch with three Japanese rice wine suppliers to explore business cooperation. This is an excellent fair with a lot of good quality wines and spirits. I really enjoy the visit.”
Leo Ai Yi Fei, President, Aura International, Mainland China

“Our company is a wine importer and distributor in Brazil selling mainly wines from Portugal and Chile. We are now expanding our product variety to meet increasing customers’ needs. This is my first visit to Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair to explore new opportunities. I have already identified seven new suppliers from Italy, South Africa, Portugal, Chile, Spain and Argentina. The South African supplier presents good quality red wine and white wine. I am looking to purchase 12,000 bottles of wines from them. Another deal is being negotiated with an Italian winery for red wine and white wine with potential order estimated at €12,600. The Hong Kong fair is well organised with so many quality wines from different parts of the world. The results are just amazing.”
Leonardo Valente Simões, Import Manager, Mise en Place, Brazil

Media Experts' View

“The first two days of the fair have been very interesting and gave me several new insights on the Asian wine market. The conference Game changer: Marketing Wine in Millennial Bottles was specially useful with concrete numbers on the market trends and advices on how to reach the younger generation, with a different way of consuming wine.

I also appreciated the high level of presentation by the Master of Wine Jeannie Cho Lee on the Variations of Cabernet. The tasting experience of those excellent wines allowed us to see the differences in the character of Cabernet Sauvignon in countries as diverse as Italy, Australia or the United States.

I also had a very enriching experience in the pavilions, tasting wines from Japan and Thailand while discovering producers and terroirs from these countries.”
Alexandra Prado Coelho, Reporter, Diario Público

“I think the Fair and the HKIWSC have demonstrated, once again, the vital role that Hong Kong is playing as a wine hub for Asia. It brings exhibitors and competition entries from such a broad range of countries around the world, from all continents, including from Asia, to show their products to potential customers in the region and, importantly, to gain a better appreciation of what they can do to better service the regional markets. It was encouraging to see stronger participation by some countries and some completely new countries participating this year. I was very impressed by the Japan Pavilion – so much larger than I had seen it previously, and with a much larger range of unique Japanese beverages. I think it was also a positive sign that there were specific Prefectural booths in the national Pavilion: it shows diversity, on a regional basis, for national products such as shochu, soju, wine and many other beverages and the long-standing cultural traditions behind these products. This display is not only of interest to local buyers but also to other international exhibitors – and I could see this because of the diversity of origin of people visiting the Japan booths.”
Denis Gastin, Asia Editor, Winestate, Australia
