What our Exhibitor has to Say

“We have brought together 14 wine producers from Abruzzo of Italy to showcase at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair for the first time. This is part of our global promotional campaign for 2018 to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, the noblest wine of the Abruzzo region. There are 32,000 hectares of vines in Abruzzo and the montepulciano grape variety spans about 17,000 hectares. Favourable climate ensures the quality of our wines and our major markets include the USA, Canada, Germany, the UK and other European countries. Our participating wineries are promoting a great variety of items from red wines and white wines to sparkling wines and rosé wines. There has been a good flow of visitors and we’ve met with many buyers from different places such as the Chinese mainland and Singapore. B2B meetings are also arranged for our wineries to explore cooperation with buyers. The initial response looks promising. We are positive that this fair will help us promote Abruzzo wines to more international buyers and extend the presence of our wineries.

“The Japanese Pavilion takes the centre stage at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair again this year with even more exhibitors. A total of 27 exhibitors from Japan including wineries, wine companies and industry associations are gathering here to showcase different products. Japanese sake from different prefectures and regions continues to be a major highlight. Among our exhibitors are some award-winning sake producers which snapped up trophies in the International Wine Challenge. Other highlights include milk liquor and plum wines as well as Japanese snacks to pair with sake. Again, we’ve met with a large number of buyers from different places this year. The feedback is very positive. The export sales of Japanese sake to Hong Kong have rallied significantly in 2017 and demand looks set to increase further. Japanese sake producers are eager to participate in the Hong Kong fair every year to reach out to more buyers. This fair is an excellent place to do business and promote the sale of our sake and wine products. We will continue to exhibit here to raise our exposure.
Ryoichi Ito, Director General, JETRO Hong Kong, Japan

“Business France is happy to be here again showcasing a great variety of French quality wines and spirits in a dedicated French Pavilion at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. Some 72 wine producers from different regions of France have come together to promote their products. About half of them are wineries from Bordeaux with other producers coming from different regions like Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence, Rhone Valley and Bourgogne. A series of tasting sessions are arranged to introduce the diversity of French wines and enhance people’s understanding about different flavours. We’ve attracted a lot of interest from buyers again. This Fair offers an excellent platform to get in touch with customers, not just buyers from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, but also those from other Asian markets like Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand. HKTDC has done a great job, making it a perfect place to promote our wines. Everything has been professionally run and it’s so easy and efficient to do business here.
Sandrine Krummenacher, Manager, French Pavilions, Wine & Spirits, Business France, France

What our Buyer has to Say

“Founded in 1935, Bodega Cuatro Rayas is the biggest winery in the D.O. Rueda region of Spain, with about 2,500 hectares of vineyard. Over 90% of our production is white wines from Verdejo grapes. We offer a wide range of products from entry level to premium white wines. Amador Diez, our top-end label derived from 125-year-old vines in our vineyard, is among the most expensive white wines in Spain. This is our third-year participation in the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair to promote our wines. We managed to secure new customers over the past two years. This year is no exception. A wine importer from Poland is about to place an order, and has selected eight white wine labels and two red wine labels already. The final amount of order is expected to be concluded soon. We’ve drawn strong interest from many buyers. Several customers from USA, Czech Republic, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and UAE have also indicated serious intent to purchase our wines. We are positive about developing business with them. This is one of the best wine fairs in Asia, offering an excellent place to find not only Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland customers, but also quality buyers from different parts of the world.
Sergio Fiorentini Manrique, Export Director/Oenologist, Bodega Cuatro Rayas, Spain

“Yantai Huanuo is a wine importer based in Yantai city of Shandong Province. In business for more than 10 years, we specialise in the sale of wines from Europe and Australia mainly. We visit the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair regularly to source new wines and new suppliers. This year, I have already found three new suppliers from Italy, France and Spain for some interesting red wines. We are looking to source a selection of wines and to place orders on a container basis with the new suppliers. This fair offers a great platform for us to enrich our wine lists. Everything has been so easy and efficient here and the staff are very helpful. I’m very pleased with what I’ve got here.”
Zhang Shuqiao, The Manager, Yantai Huanuo Import & Export Co., Ltd, Chinese mainland

“Wine-Butik is operating a wine shop in central Moscow selling different kinds of wines and spirits. With a business history of 11 years, we strive to expand our portfolio and add more products on our wine lists. This is our third-time visit to the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair to source new wines. So far, we have established contact with three Japanese sake producers. They are offering sake with different flavours and varied sweetness. We expect to purchase about US$10,000 worth of sake from each of them. We are still looking around for more new suppliers at the fairground, particularly those from Asia offering wines and spirits with regional flavours as well as wines from France, Italy and Australia. We really like visiting this Fair where a lot of products are being showcased. We’re impressed by its excellent service and helpful staff, which has enabled us do business in a cozy and comfortable environment.”

Media Expert's View

“The 11th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair kicked off with 1,075 exhibitors from 33 countries and regions with various interesting tastings, interactive demonstrations and seminars to provide the ultimate journey from vine to cellar.

Colourful labels, interesting brands and packaging, informative tastings and great speakers all impressed on the first day of this global wine industry event.

One product of interest, not only because of the quality of the wine, but also for the story behind the wine, is the Grand Vin de Stellenbosch, a red Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine, produced by Origin Wine, has well-defined blackcurrant aromas on the nose with sweet spice, as well as rich vanilla oak and dark plum flavours. The wine is surprisingly accessible now with soft ripe tannins, but will most definitely benefit from two to four years’ maturation.

The Grand Vin de Stellenbosch is a product from Le Grand Domaine in the Devon Valley in Stellenbosch (South Africa), Origin Wine’s first investment in vineyards. With this brand, Origin Wine, a company previously known as a one-stop specialist supplier of commercial-style South African wines to offshore supermarkets, is steadily climbing into the fine-wine territory.

Quality grapes, grown in the superb appellation of the Devon Valley in the Stellenbosch region in the Cape Winelands, were key to the class of this wine. It emphasises the regional identity of this fine wine. Visit the stand and taste the Grand Vin de Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2016 in Hall 3C-E.”
Wanda Augustyn, Editor, WineLand, South Africa

“The systematic layout, numerous programmes and participation of many countries at this Wine Fair are very impressive. Beyond wine, there are also many other useful, sophisticated and eye-catching wine accessories to explore. Polpak, for example, is designed to keep bottles safe from external impact by injecting air into a plastic pack, which shortens the packing time and minimises damage.
It has been a fruitful and interesting journey and I extend my best wishes for prosperity at the HKTDC Wine & Spirits Fair.”
PARK SENA, Editor, Liquor Journal, Korea

“This is one of the greatest wine fairs in the world, without a doubt. The Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair is in its 11th edition, featuring 1,075 exhibitors from 33 different countries and regions. It’s open to the public on the event’s last day for just HK$100, wine fans can enjoy a full day of activities. Here are some interesting and special things that I have noticed:

The first single cask whisky of Tomatin's Hong Kong agent is named after a famous song in Hong Kong, "Beneath Lion Rock.” This song talks about how people came to Hong Kong and worked together with different cultures, skin colours, languages, values and how people need to unite and make Hong Kong a better place. They have taken on the same spirit with whisky, selecting a special cask (#3457) to make only 257 bottles of a customised whisky (ABV 60.7%, MSRP HK$1,600) and they donate HK$200 to help autism care for every bottle sold.

OMAR whisky (Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation) is also featured at this fair, the second time that they have participated in this event. OMAR is a whisky brand which is distilled and matured in Nantou, Taiwan. They brought their products with them, like bourbon casks, sherry casks and cask-strength products. Have a taste and I believe you'll be amazed.”
